Two security guards testify in students' trial
JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court heard testimony from two National University security guards yesterday and each said that they did not actually see the 12 university students on trial in the act of assaulting student regiment members or burning the regiment's post.
The two security guards testifying at the court session, led by judge Moegihardjo, were Kasmir Halimi and Hendrik Pribadi.
Kasmir said that on Oct. 18, 1994, he arrived National University's (UNAS) campus at around 8 a.m. At 1:15 p.m. he heard a firecracker explode and saw students protesting the regiment's presence on campus.
He said that the riot involved more than a hundred students. Because of the crowds he could not see who was responsible for burning the regiment's post, assaulting three regiment members or destroying the office of deputy rector Bambang Permadi.
"But I saw some of the defendants like Yahdi Jamhur, Reza Pahlevi Badar, Darmawan and Syech Al Djufri in the crowd," Kasmir said.
Kasmir, a retired Armed Forces officer and security guard at the university since May 1993, said that the defendants were just walking amid the crowds.
"After the riot I saw my colleague take one of the regiment members, Ali Ariza Haniputra, to the hospital for his wounds," Kasmir said.
The second witness, Hendrik Pribadi, said that on Oct. 18, 1994, he came to the campus around 8 a.m. because he was assigned to watch over a seminar which was to be opened by the rector.
"At 1:15 p.m. I went for my afternoon prayer. On the way to the mosque I heard on my walkie-talkie that there was a riot at the student regiment post and by the time I arrived there the post had already been set on fire," Hendrik said.
He also said that he saw many people attacking Ali Ariza behind the regiment's post.
However, when the judge asked him to look at the faces of the defendants and identify those who attacked Ali, Hendrik said that he had seen some of the defendants but that he did not see them attacking Ali.
"Then I quickly helped Ali and took him to Pasar Minggu hospital," he said, adding that he came back to the campus soon afterwards.
"When I arrived at the campus from the hospital I saw the deputy rector's office in bad condition. When I went in I found Irvan Alfariza, another regiment member, lying unconscious with blood all over his face," he said.
He said that he went back to Pasar Minggu hospital, this time carrying Irvan.
In yesterday's session, presiding Judge Moegihardjo, examined the 12 defendants in two separate sessions.
The defendants are all members of the Association of Nature Lovers. They are accused of intentionally assaulting four members of the university's student regiment and of burning the regiment's post on Oct. 18 last year.
The attack came after regiment members reportedly destroyed the association's secretariat on Oct. 14.
In the first trial session the judge examined Yahdi Djamhur Reza Pahlevi, Darmawan Bahtiar, Rakai Aria Dipa Erlangga, Benedictus Satrio Widyanarto and Budi Murdiyanto. In the second session he examined Syech Aljufri, Agus Heryana Anirun, Wahyu Sugito, Kusnadi Darisan, Sudradjat Trisna and Indra Mulia Ismet Kamil.
The judge then adjourned the trial until March 9. (mas)
