PT Unindo denies protest reports

JAKARTA (JP): The management of PT Unindo, a producer of
distribution and power transformers and medium voltage
switchgears, yesterday denied reports that it was among companies
accused by workers of failing to make the compulsory extra
payment to its employees.

The payment of the equivalent of one month's wages must, by
law, be made prior to the major religious holidays of workers.

Herve Hernabeu, vice president of PT Unindo, whose factory is
located in East Jakarta, said that his company did not have any
problem with its workers.

"We are a joint venture company of the Indonesian government
and the Anglo-French company GEC Alsthom and our trade mark is
registered with the Ministry of Justice," he said.

Over 70 workers from seven companies in Bogor and Tangerang
attended the Ministry of Manpower on Friday to protest against
employer violations of the ministerial decree on annual extra
pay.

The 70 workers claimed to represent about 1,500 other workers
who have not yet received the compulsory extra pay. The seven
companies concerned are PT Ever Sintex and PT Sungil Sejahtera in
Cileungsi, near Bogor, and PT Sinar Ragam, PT Unindo NPS, PT
Trimasakti, PT OHA Kencana and PT Tebing Artanas, all in
Tangerang.

The Tangerang-based PT Unindo NPS is a producer of sandals and
carpets. (hhr)
