Basofi permits PDI meeting

SURABAYA, East Java: Governor Basofi Sudirman has issued a
permit to the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian
Democratic Party (PDI) to hold a regional meeting.

PDI chief Megawati Soekarnoputri said yesterday all local
Party leaders would convene to resolve the notorious internal
bickering.

"Governor Basofi Sudirman has basically approved the meeting,"
Megawati was quoted by Antara as saying after she saw the
governor.

She and other PDI senior functionaries, including Fatimah
Achmad, Soetardjo Soerjogoeritno, and deputy secretary general
Haryanto Taslam recently met to discuss the planned congress.

The governor has not officially recognized Sutjipto whom
Megawati named chief of the PDI East Java chapter. (imn)
