Damaged road in Rempoa
Damaged road in Rempoa From Neraca I am depressed to see the condition of the roads in Rempoa. The stretch running from Rempoa to Bintaro has never been properly repaired. The street has eroded at the sides and is full of hastily covered potholes. The road has become even worse from former diggings of the city water company, who has perfunctorily covered excavations with clay. When it rains, the clay turns to mud.

Labor protests provoked SEMARANG, Central Java: Out of the 20 labor protests this year, some 40 percent are "impure" because the workers were instigated by other parties, an official charged. Accor to open new hotels JAKARTA (JP): Accor Asia Pacific Corporation, which operates hotels worldwide, will expand its Indonesian network to eight hotels by opening six new ones next year. The company, which has a network of 2,300 hotels in 135 countries, announced here yesterday that one of the new Indonesian hotels -- Novotel Benoa Bali -- will open in the middle of next year. Accor said that it had signed a contract with Kaestindo Group to manage the 200-room hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Petrosea's profit drops JAKARTA (JP): PT Petrosea, a mining construction company, yesterday reported a 68.3 percent decline in its net profit to Rp 7.04 billion (US$2.3 million) during the first nine months of this year. The company's president, Timothy Richard Humphry, explained to the company's shareholders in a meeting here that the major causes of the profit decrease were a decline in its constructions jobs and the payment of previous years' tax liabilities.

Coffee prices fall LONDON (Reuter): Robusta coffee futures shaved some early losses after sliding to a new life-of-contract low of US$2,007 a ton in early trade yesterday but were still easier at midday on trade and origin selling. "There was selling from both Indonesia and Vietnam...I think they are panicking a little," one said. At midday the front-month January contract was down $54 $2,020 and above a fresh contract low of $2,007 a ton -- the lowest since July 7.

Umar Kayam hospitalized JAKARTA (JP): Scholar Umar Kayam, 65, was reportedly admitted to the Metropolitan Medical Center recently for a serious illness. Kayam was supposed to present a paper for the First National Arts Congress at the Kartika Chandra Hotel yesterday. When he failed to do so, he was represented by Budi Darma, another prominent literary figure. Sidewalk stalls From Neraca I am indebted to the Central Jakarta mayor who ordered the removal of illegal structures on riverbanks and of the eateries which occupied sidewalks along Jl. Dr. Wahidin behind the Ministry of Finance. However, the eateries were a great help to employees of the offices in the vicinity who took their breakfast and lunch there. At night the shacks were used by the owners as a dwelling place. Nowadays the scenery is unsightly because the people use emergency tents.
