ASEAN awaiting Yangon's response
JAKARTA (JP): Myanmar has yet to confirm its commitment to accede to the southeast Asian Nuclear Weapons Treaty which will be signed in Bangkok next week.
The Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Ajit Singh, said here yesterday that Yangon is the only country left in the region to express its commitment.
"We's got two-positive replies already from Cambodia and Laos that they will be signing the treaty and we are awaiting word from Myanmar," he said.
ASEAN heads of government along with leaders from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar will meet in Bangkok for a summit which will include the signing of the treaty which has taken 10-years in the making.
Despite Myanmar's unconfirmed response, Singh yesterday remained confident of the signing. "We are awaiting a response. It is not to say that we are not sure," he remarked.(mds)
