Neglect of cattle punishable

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Governor Poedjono Pranyoto issued a decree recently saying people who allow their buffaloes and cows to run wild and destroy other people's farms may be punished.

The Antara news agency reported yesterday that the governor made the decision in response to some local people's complaints about the many "neglected" livestock freely roaming their yards.

Wagiman, a resident of Sumber Mulyo village, Nakau subdistrict, West Lampung, said the animals also disrupt traffic because they often wander the streets.

Poedjono cited article 549 of the Criminal Code which says that people who let their cattle run wild and disturb other people or ruin crops may be fined up to Rp 25,000 (approximately US$ 11).

"But don't take the law onto your own hands by, say, killing the neglected animals," Poedjono advised people. (swe)
