Umar Kayam hospitalized
JAKARTA (JP): Scholar Umar Kayam, 65, was reportedly admitted
to the Metropolitan Medical Center recently for a serious
illness.
Kayam was supposed to present a paper for the First National
Arts Congress at the Kartika Chandra Hotel yesterday. When he
failed to do so, he was represented by Budi Darma, another
prominent literary figure.
Born in April, 1932, in Ngawi, Central Java, Kayam is well
known for his bold short stories, essays, novels and scientific
articles. He is also a lecturer at Gadjah Mada University in
Yogyakarta.
He received his master's degree in sociology from the
University of New York and his doctoral degree from Cornell
University, both in the United States. (raw)
