Two suspects named in ship tragedy SORONG, Irian Jaya: Police detained a ship captain and an official of a transportation agency at Teminabuan in connection with the capsized Sembra vessel in a Sorong regency river estuary which claimed 29 lives. The two men, identified as S, 33, and M, 35, were detained on charges of neglect which led to the loss of lives. Antara reported that preliminary questioning revealed the two men were intimidated by passengers prior to the accident.

Nemah and her friend Mak Nib were entering a chili plantation when both of them touched the electrified gate. The electric gate is intended to protect the plantation from thieves at night. Nemah died instantly, but Mak Nib survived the incident.

Dynaplast's profit surges JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Dynaplast announced on Saturday a consolidated net income of Rp 14.5 billion (about US$1.93 million) in the first half of the year ending on June 30. This is a 49 percent increase over the corresponding period last year. The plastic crate and components manufacturer said the increase was mainly the result of a jump in domestic consumer demand in the second quarter due to an increase in people's purchasing power.
