RI immigrants deported JAKARTA: Some 1,615 Indonesians held in jail in Malaysia for violating immigration laws were deported and sent home yesterday on board an Indonesian naval vessel from Johor Baru to Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, Antara reported yesterday. Conducted under an Indonesian-Malaysian cooperation program, it was the third deportation batch this year following a group of 1,020 people in January and 1,588 people in July.

Tap water pipes clogged KENDARI, S.E. Sulawesi: Thousands of residents have experienced over the past week a shortage of clean water because pipelines have been clogged by unknown people. Mayor Masie Abunawas confirmed the problem and said he had ordered the local water company to repair the system. The company processed water from Anduonuhu River in Poasia district. The pipe that connected the spring to a water reservoir had been found to be clogged with rocks.

PT Telkom nets 17% rise in net profit JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Telkom reported yesterday a 17 percent increase in net profit to Rp 821 billion (US$305.2 million) in the first half of 1997 over the same period last year. The growth rate was lower than 44.91 percent recorded in the first semester last year. The company said its operating revenue rose 21 percent to Rp 2.87 trillion in the January-to-June period this year over the same period last year.

It was about wedding plans that nearly went wrong because the prospective bridegroom was thought to be a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) carrier. The program was meant to entertain viewers but it contained several scenes that caused concern. The family of the prospective bride went into a panic, fearing it could be a contagion.

Merapi has been spewing out an average 47 tons of sulfuric gas a day since Monday, with red-hot lava flowing down to the tributaries of the Sat, Krasak, Bebeng, Senowo and Boyong rivers. The lava has flowed down 2.5 km from the crater, according to the head of the team formed by Yogyakarta's volcanology office to monitor Mt. Merapi, Mas Atje Purbawinata.

12 handguns confiscated JAKARTA (JP): The City Police have confiscated at least 12 different handguns from alleged criminals over the last year. Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said that four of the 12 guns were seized this month from two gangs specializing in burglaries and robbing bank customers. Two of the four are a Colt and a Smith & Wesson, both .38 caliber, which are usually used by the police on operational duties and for shooting exercises, respectively.

The Rp 8,805,000 (US$3,200) cost is inclusive of round-trip airfare to Saudi Arabia, accommodation, food, spending money and a Rp 50,000 allowance towards domestic transportation costs from points of arrival in Indonesia to hometowns. Ferry service explored KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The provincial administration and that of Australia's Northern Territory are exploring the possibility of opening a ferry service between Kupang and Darwin to boost tourism and trade relations between the regions. The head of the provincial office of tourism, Johannis Pake Pani, was quoted by Antara as saying that a delegation from Australia will visit next month to survey local conditions for the ferry service.
