Singapore fights to save coral

SINGAPORE (AP): Professional and volunteer divers are trying
to save five types of hard coral by moving it from Singapore's
Southern Islands before a land reclamation project begins in
October, a newspaper reported yesterday.

The divers are hoping to salvage 20 percent of the coral
around Pulau Seringat, by moving and replanting it off the coast
of Sentosa Island, near the main island of Singapore, The Straits
Times reported.

About 90 percent of the coral already moved have survived, but
only the five hardiest types are being transported, the paper
said.

The S$15,000 Singapore (US$10,000) rescue operation is funded
by Underwater World Singapore, which is one of the tourist
attractions on Sentosa Island.
