Japan Foundation screens free films
Japan Foundation screens free films JAKARTA (JP): Two Japanese films will be screened at the Japan Foundation from May 15 to May 20 for free. The films, to be shown at the Summitmas I building, are Daiyukai, (Rainbow Kids) and Tsugumi. Both films have texts in Indonesian. Daiyukai, directed by Kihachi Okamata, is set in a mountain village in Central Japan. It was adopted from a 1979 novel called "Big Kidnapping". Shows are on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. and Monday from 7 p.m.

In less than five months from now, Jakarta will be proud host to the 19th Southeast Asian Games -- or SEA Games, as it is more popularly known -- which is scheduled to open on Oct. 11 with pomp and ceremony at the capital's Senayan sports complex. Without a doubt, the holding of such an important event of this magnitude warrants special efforts, which any good citizen would be proud to participate in. Jakarta, after all, is the capital of Southeast Asia's largest country.

Indorama posts Rp 36.2b net profit JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed polyester maker Indorama Synthetics posted a Rp 36.2 billion net profit in the first quarter of 1997, up 77 percent from Rp 20.4 billion in 1996. The company said yesterday it also recorded a 26 percent increase in net sales to Rp 198.6 billion in the first quarter over Rp 158.1 billion in the corresponding period last year. Earnings per share surged 19 percent to Rp 224.

Silk Air to Balikpapan JAKARTA (JP): National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia in cooperation with Singapore's Silk Air will link Balikpapan in East Kalimantan and Singapore twice a week with a 78-seat Fokker 70 aircraft service. Garuda said here yesterday the service would start on June 2. The service is a result of a tourism cooperation agreement signed by Indonesia and Singapore in Yogyakarta in late 1994. The direct service will operate on Mondays and Fridays.

ADB aids Islamic school JAKARTA: The Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing US$85 million in financial aid for Indonesia's Islamic high schools in rural areas. Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines Abu Hartono and ADB President Mitsuo Sato signed the aid agreement in Manila Tuesday, Antara reported Saturday. The financial aid is the result of a meeting between ADB officials and Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs in Manila on Feb. 24-25.

Three men held for heroin JAKARTA (JP): Three men have been arrested separately for illegally possessing and trading heroin in Central Jakarta, the police said Saturday. City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said two of the drug-pushers, Rudi Hilwan, 28, and Koreri Suwage, 37, were busted in a raid while trading 30 grams of heroin at Karet cemetery, Central Jakarta, Thursday. Both men told the police they had obtained the heroin from a foreigner, Aritonang said.

Woman dies of overdose JAKARTA (JP): A young woman died early Sunday at the Sumber Waras hospital in West Jakarta from an Ecstasy overdose. "The body showed that Setyorini had overdosed on Ecstasy pills," a forensic staff member of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital said. 252 Indonesians to vote in Darwin DARWIN (JP): Two hundred and fifty two of the 405 Indonesians living in Australia's Northern Territory are expected to vote in the May 29 poll. Widodo Surono, Indonesian consul general here, said yesterday his office had to either post election registration forms to would-be voters or call them directly. "We provided stamps to make it easier, but not all Indonesians responded. Most of them are blue collar workers who have to work," he said.
