Vote for Golkar, take new husband

JAKARTA: Golkar supporters are promising almost anything to get people to join their ranks.

A noisy motorcade of 40 Golkar supporters slowed down to speak to a group of women in Moslem attire yesterday on a roadside in Durikosambi, West Jakarta.

One motorcyclist yelled, "Long live Golkar," and made a two finger sign at the middle-aged ladies. "Vote for Golkar Bu Haji!" he said before speeding away.

Bu Haji is the term for a Moslem woman who has been on the haj pilgrimage to Mecca, or is the wife of a Mecca pilgrimage veteran.

Then a man among a tightly packed group on a truck shouted at the women, who returned the two-finger Golkar sign, "Bu Haji, vote for Golkar and take an additional husband". (pan)
