Index rates Jakarta as top province JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta, Yogyakarta and North Sulawesi are regarded the best three provinces out of Indonesia's 27, according to the human development index (HDI), while Irian Jaya, West Nusa Tenggara and East Timor are the worst. Number of hot spots increases again: Agency JAKARTA (JP): More hot spots, or fire locations, have been detected yesterday in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Java to 62 yesterday from 40 in the previous day. The Environmental Impact Management Agency said yesterday that satellite images showed 26 hot spots located in Central Kalimantan, or 25 higher than shown in Sunday's satellite images. In West Kalimantan there were eight hot spots, and one in South Kalimantan.

Bintang opens new plant JAKARTA (JP): Beer producer PT Multi Bintang Indonesia opened a new brewery plant yesterday in Sampangagung, Mojokerto, East Java. Company president Herman Hofhuis said the new 34-hectare plant cost about Rp 150 billion (US$44.11 million). The Sampangagung plant would be able to produce 80 million liters a year, equivalent to 240 million cans and bottles, he said.

The opening ceremonies went off quite well. However, I am quite appalled at the constant emphasis on Indonesia having to be No. 1 during the Games. 6,000 go on strike in Tangerang TANGERANG (JP): More than 6,000 shoemakers at a Cibadak factory, in the Cikupa district, here went on strike yesterday to protest their employer's flippant approach to firing staff. The strikers, who began a sit-in at the factory's compound about 8 a.m., also demanded that the management fire the factory's personnel manager, Bambang Sardoko. When Bambang attempted to watch the strike, he was chased and beaten by some of the angry employees.

"If we seriously take care of the food problem caused by the drought, I predict inflation will not reach 10 percent, but will stay around 7 percent," Soegito said yesterday after meeting with President Soeharto.

Matahari revises profit
Matahari revises profit JAKARTA (JP): PT Matahari Putra Prima said yesterday that it had lowered its net profit target this year to Rp 52 billion (US$15.29 million) from Rp 92 billion due to the currency turmoil. Matahari finance director Antonius Hanifah Komala attributed the lower profit to the company's loss in foreign exchange transactions totaling about Rp 39 billion. "Our profit from operations will remain the same," Antonius said yesterday after the company's general shareholders meeting.

Thai government to unveil economic recovery package BANGKOK (AFP): Thai Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya said yesterday economic ministers approved tough new regulations to force a restructuring of the ailing finance sector as part of a long-awaited economic recovery package. The sector will be required to raise huge amounts of new capital, so financial authorities have been given authority to waive the current limit of 25 percent on foreign holdings in Thai financial institutions.
