Prison warders go on trial for Tansil escape JAKARTA (JP): The East Jakarta District Court yesterday heard the indictment, by a team of prosecutors, of three of the five prison warders charged with helping notorious businessman Eddy Tansil escape from the Cipinang penitentiary on May 4 this year. Three prosecutors said in their indictments that Mochamad Hasan, Maryono and Suparmo had planned to facilitate Tansil's escape as they had received money from the jailbird.

Interbeton wins RI orders RIJSWIJK, Netherlands (Reuter): Construction firm Hollandsche Beton Groep NV (HBG) said yesterday its subsidiary Interbeton had won Indonesian orders worth a total of 110 million guilders. HBG said in a statement Interbeton's Indonesian unit Decorient had landed a total of three orders. One of these consists of building a factory for Barbie dolls for PT Mattel Indonesia near the Indonesian capital Jakarta, which will be ready at the end of 1997.

Consumer price index up 0.27 percent in August JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.27 percent in August, compared with 0.68 percent in July, Minister of Information Harmoko announced yesterday. Speaking after a limited cabinet meeting on the economy, Harmoko said that food prices fell by an average of 0.35 percent but that housing prices in the same month rose 0.27 percent, clothing prices 0.16 percent and other goods and services were up 1.16 percent.

Taiwan FM here on private visit JAKARTA (JP): Taiwan Foreign Minister John Chang arrived in town yesterday but Indonesian officials, in keeping with the country's "One-China" policy, have refused to confirm his presence. Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas twice rebuffed reporters who asked about the Taiwan minister's visit. "There is no such visit," he replied sharply on both occasions.
