Pirated CDs, cassettes seized JAKARTA (JP): The city police arrested a man yesterday for pirating CDs and cassettes in his house, on Jl. Paladis Raya, Sunter Agung, North Jakarta. According to spokesman Maj. Nyoman Suryasta, the police also seized 37 CD and cassette mastering devices, 2,161 pirated CDs, and 6,649 pirated cassettes from the suspect, Ronny Piliang, aged 30. Most of the pirated goods were to be distributed and sold in several locations in the area.

HK firm buys Marga stake SINGAPORE (Reuter): Hongkong Land Ltd said it had acquired a US$30 million interest in Indonesia toll road operating company PT Marga Mandalasakti (PTMM). In a statement late on Tuesday, Hongkong Land said PTMM operates the Tangerang-Merak Toll Road, which opened in 1993 and is the westernmost section of the proposed Trans-Java Highway. Hongkong Land's investment represents 10.3 percent of PTMM's share capital and will be provided from existing resources.

Impassable Jl. Fatmawati From Neraca Two months ago a traffic light was installed at the crossing of Jl. Haji Nawi and Jl. Fatmawati, which did not improve traffic at all. Since then, frustrating traffic jams have become the norm. The situation is worse than it was when we had to cope only with sporadic jams. Then the road became impassable during early morning and afternoon peak hours. Vehicles were able to move only at a snail's pace.

Indonesia joins anti-nuclear test club JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas has signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), making Indonesia among the first countries to sign the agreement which officially puts an end to nuclear testing, Antara said yesterday. Alatas is currently in New York to attend the 51st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The first to sign the treaty was U.S. President Bill Clinton whose country has the largest nuclear arsenal.

Why is PON a turnoff? From Merdeka What is happening to the public? It is as if people have lost interest in what is happening around them, except if a student riot has erupted somewhere. There is even no interest in the on- going National Games, PON, currently being held in Jakarta. The papers and electronic media are reporting poor attendances this year. Only athletes and their friends are filling the seats, giving rousing support to those in the sporting arenas. It is such a pity.
