Plagiarizers face dismissal SEMARANG, Central Java: Diponegoro University rector Muladi threatened Saturday to fire teachers who plagiarize their students' papers or theses. Muladi said plagiarizing is a serious breach of intellectual property rights and deserves harsh punishment. Muladi, also a member of the National Commission on Human Rights, said that if it goes unchecked, plagiarism will tarnish the national education system as a whole.

The Supreme Court, in a hearing presided over by Chief Justice Soerjono Thursday, rejected charges made by Goenawan Mohamad over revocation of the magazine's publishing license (by Minister of Information Harmoko). In its verdict the Supreme Court overturned the previous decisions of the Jakarta Administrative Court and the Jakarta Administrative High Court, both of which ruled in Goenawan's favor.

Driver of deadly bus to be tried soon JAKARTA (JP): The trial of an inter-city bus driver involved in an accident which killed 31 passengers last March, will start on Thursday at the Bogor District Court. Agus Arifin, the driver, is charged with causing the deaths of the passengers when the Kramatdjati bus crashed into stationary vehicles and burst into flames. The victims were mostly bus passengers who failed to reach the single exit and burned to death.

Thai durians I now live in Thailand, but came back to Indonesia in March and April to visit old friends. I was surprised to see Thai durians on sale at Sogo Department Store in Plaza Indonesia. Surprised because of the outrageous prices. "Chance" durians were Rp 32,000 a kilo and "Mon Tong" durians were Rp 35,000 a kilo. Two days later, I came back home to Thailand (I live in a small city some 80 kilometers west of Bangkok).

Jakarta flooded The weather had been fine for the last few days, and yet -- believe it or not -- Jakarta was flooded again. I live in Pluit, North Jakarta. On June 4, when I went to work, I was very surprised to find that part of Pluit's residential area was flooded with water, which came up from ditches along the streets. At that time, I thought that it might be caused by jammed ditches and would soon be settled. To our puzzlement, the flood did not show any signs of declining in the evening.

Kramat Sentiong in Central Jakarta on Saturday. Central Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col.
