Kite festival in SE Sulawesi KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The province will host an international kite festival in July, Antara reported yesterday, It quoted head of the provincial tourism office Andi Noor Karim as saying that participants will come from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Australia, Japan and the United States. The province will exhibit its traditional kites made of bamboo and cassava leaves, known locally as kolope, with strings spun of pineapple fibers.

At least 3 killed as overpass collapses JAKARTA (JP): A semi-constructed, 500-ton overpass in West Jakarta collapsed yesterday morning killing at least three laborers and injuring 17 others. The death toll is expected to rise as people are still believed to be buried in the rubble. The rescue team used four giant cranes to move wreckage in the hunt for victims. Matsushita forms unit in RI TOKYO (Reuter): Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. said yesterday it would form a lithium battery production subsidiary in Bekasi, Indonesia, in June to meet growing demand for the product throughout Asia. The new company, PT Panasonic Battery of Indonesia, will be capitalized at US$10 million and owned 35 percent by Matsushita and the rest by two of Matsushita's subsidiaries.

Film on Dayak tribe JAKARTA (JP): A documentary on the Ngaju-Dayak people in Central Kalimantan will be shown Monday at the Goethe-Institut in Central Jakarta. The film, to be shown at 7 p.m., was made in the Tumbang Malahui village by ethnologists who studied in Munchen, Germany, Sri Kuhnt-Saptodewo and Hanno Kampffmeyer. The two-hour film, which is in English and was produced in 1993 to 1994, is titled Bury me twice, a death ritual on the Ngaju-Dayak. (anr)

Students killed in street fights JAKARTA (JP): Two high school students have been killed in two separate fights in West and South Jakarta recently. Rusli, 17, a student of STM PGRI 3 technical high school, was killed on Wednesday during a fight in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta. According to Rusli's brother, Adang, Rusli was beaten by a group of students. One of the students stabbed Rusli in the back with a knife. Rusli died on the way to hospital.

Court hears Indorayon case MEDAN, North Sumatra: The district court opened yesterday the trial of MLI, who stands accused of destroying property after he was not accepted as an employee of PT Inti Indorayon Utama. MLI allegedly vandalized Indorayon's property last July. The prosecutor said the accused threw stones, breaking windows at the pulp and paper company's office. Antara reported that MLI also allegedly attacked an on-duty security officer who is still undergoing hospital treatment.
