Man allegedly arranges his grandson's murder
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police have arrested an elderly
man, along with six others, for allegedly plotting the killing of
his grandson following a dispute over a family legacy.
Jakarta Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said that
Bacing, in his 70s, allegedly hired the six other suspects to
kill Andre Syamsu on Dec. 9 last year.
Syamsu, in his 20s, was fatally bashed on the head with an
iron bar by one of the suspects, who positioned the body and the
victim's motorcycle on a road in Sawangan, Bogor, about 40
kilometers south of Jakarta.
"The suspects thought that the position of the body and his
motorbike would lead the police and passersby to believe he was
involved in a traffic accident," Iman said.
Syamsu's body was found the next day and was identified after
the Sawangan Police went to Syamsu's house, after obtaining his
address from his motorcycle registration papers.
"After intense investigation sessions, the seven suspects were
arrested on Thursday at their respective houses, which are close
to the victim's home," said officer Iman.
The case became clear only after Syamsu's mother allegedly
found papers on the murder conspiracy at the house of one of the
suspects, who is also a close relative of the victim. The papers
implicate Syamsu's grandfather as the main conspirer.
Besides Bacing, the police also arrested Tarmidzi, Basri
Sembiring, Bahagia Sembiring, Karim, Arifin and Nunung, who is
also a close relative of the victim.
Iman said Bacing had allegedly hired the suspects and paid
each man Rp 10 million in cash to kill the victim, who always
refused to sell a house which is a family legacy.
Preliminary police investigation found that Nunung came to
Syamsu's house on Dec. 8, 1995 and invited him along to see
Nunung's brother who was being treated at the Ciputat hospital.
While the other suspects hired a taxi to take them to
Sawangan, Syamsu and Nunung were riding the motorcycle to the
same area.
On the road the taxi blocked the motorcycle's path, forcing
Syamsu and Nunung to stop. In a matter of seconds, one of the
suspects bashed the victim on the head with an iron bar, leaving
the body and the motorcycle on the street.
Syamsu's mother went to Nunung's house the day after looking
for her son.
Nunung said Syamsu had gone to Cinanta to visit his
girlfriend, Iman said.
"His mother only learned the truth after several Sawangan
police officers came to her house to inform her about the finding
of an unidentified corpse and a motorcycle," Iman said. (bsr)
