SBSI to hold poem contest

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) will hold a poetry writing and reading contest to celebrate its fourth anniversary on April 25.

Head of the union En Jacob Ereste told The Jakarta Post that the contest is open to workers, activists, union members and all members of the public.

Participants should send their works to SBSI's office on Jl. Bunga No. 31, East Jakarta, before April 10.

SBSI is not recognized by the government, which acknowledges the All-Indonesia Workers Union Federation (SPSI) as the only legal union for workers in the country.

"The founding of SBSI on April 25, 1992, in Bogor should be celebrated a meaningful way, considering that it has gone through so many obstacles and challenges in its struggle for a better life for workers," Jacob said.

Jacob said the contest reflects SBSI's efforts to improve the life of each worker and to give them a chance to channel their artistic talents. "People tend to think that workers don't have any interest in the arts," he said. (03)
