PDI begins street parades in Yogya

YOGYAKARTA: Thousands of young Indonesian Democratic Party
(PDI) supporters here on Wednesday poured into the streets for a
procession across the city on their motorbikes and cars.

The chairman of the PDI's Yogyakarta chapter, H. Suharto, said
the party youngsters were celebrating syawalan, a traditional
Javanese post-Idul Fitri get-together, and not gathering for any
political purpose.

Antara reported that the size of the procession was so large
that traffic in the city and activities in several government
offices were disrupted. (mds)
