Pertamina's old tankers head for the scrap yard JAKARTA (JP): The state oil and gas company Pertamina will scrap 12 tankers that it has sailed for 20 years and replace them with new ones, the company's junior director, Ilham Sjarief, said yesterday. "We have set up a special team to implement the scrapping plan," he said. The special team includes representatives from the ministries of finance, mines and energy and transportation.

Small lakes latest idea to combat Jakarta's floods BOGOR, West Java (JP): The latest flood prevention suggestion is to build small lakes in the city, a Bogor expert said. A. Sjarifuddin Karama, director of Bogor's Land and Agroclimate Research Center, said recently the building of small lakes in Jakarta should be added to flood prevention measures. ABRI and Belo From Kompas I was delighted to read the Vatican Embassy's response to the Kompas article concerning the appointment of Bishop Belo as bishop of East Timor. I hope that this issue will not invite a prolonged polemic next time. It seems that the Vatican Embassy's Secretariat misunderstood the article. Headless body three days old: Expert JAKARTA (JP): A forensic expert said a headless body found Saturday in Klender, East Jakarta was three days old. Mun'im Idris of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital said yesterday he believed the boy, found on Jl. I Gusti Ngurah Rai, was killed Thursday night. The boy is thought to have been a scavenger aged between 12 to 14 years. Mun'im said the body was similar to that of another dead boy found in July in Pondok Kopi, also East Jakarta.

Two killed on toll road JAKARTA (JP): A village head and one of his staff member were killed in an accident Saturday night on the Cikampek toll road in Karawang. The victims were in a Toyota Kijang van which rolled after getting a flat tire. The victims, village head HM Djaman 50, of Mangunjaya in Bekasi, and Arifin, 44, who was driving, were heading toward Cikampek. The accident occurred in the Telukjambe area. Taiwan-China trade rises TAIPEI (AFP): Indirect trade between Taiwan and China registered US$17.8 billion in the first 10 months of this year, a 2.6 percent rise over the same period of 1995, the economics ministry said Sunday. Taiwan's bilateral trade surplus grew 5.7 percent to $12.7 billion, the ministry said. Exports to the mainland during the January-October period advanced 3.9 percent to $15.3 billion while imports dropped 4.5 percent to $2.5 billion, it said.

Pelindo I upgrades seaports MEDAN, North Sumatra (Antara): PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Pelindo I) plans to spend Rp 11.3 billion upgrading some of its seaports in North Sumatra in the 1997/1998 financial year. "These funds will be allocated to a project which covers dredging of port basins, coastal reclamation and pier and warehouse rehabilitation", PT Pelindo I spokesman Hasyim Lubis said here over the weekend.
