SBSI protests over arrest of its member JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) staged a protest at the House of Representatives yesterday to call for the release of one of its leaders in Binjai, North Sumatra, who has been detained there without warrant by police for 27 days. "Free Roliati Harefa in the name of justice," read a poster of one of the 30 demonstrating union members and supporters. Roliati, the union branch's deputy in Binjai, was detained last Dec. 30.

The beer department of the Association of Beverage Producers complained at a press conference here that local beer sold in Bali, Indonesia's most popular tourist destination, has been levied at Rp 400 (17.3 U.S. cents) per bottle by Arbamass.

Crash victim dies in hospital BANDUNG: A woman who suffered severe burns when a light trainer plane crash-landed in a busy shopping street here last week died, bringing the total death toll to 16, Antara reported. The woman was identified only as 35-year old Eti, a local resident who was in one of the four shops hit by the plane and later razed by the fire. Bad debts at state banks keep rising JAKARTA (JP): Bad debts at the seven state-owned banks rose further by around Rp 55 billion in the June-November period of last year, to Rp 7.86 trillion (US$3.4 billion), the central bank said yesterday. Soedradjad Djiwandono said the continued increase in the state banks' bad debts was caused by a further rise in the amount of non-performing loans turning into fully unpaid credits.

Piling works disrupt phones JAKARTA (JP): As many as 368 telephone lines from the Tebet Automatic Telephone Exchange have been disrupted since Tuesday due to piles being driven into the ground at the Jl. Casablanca construction project. Rizal Saat, the head of PT Telkom's East Jakarta office said in a release yesterday that the piling works have destroyed 500 pairs of premier cable in Tebet. The result is that telephone lines with the prefixes of 829, 830, 831 and 835 are out of order.
