State transportation firms post higher profits
JAKARTA (JP): Fifteen of the 17 state-owned enterprises overseen by the Ministry of Transportation last year netted a total profit of Rp 806.87 billion (US$349.5 million), 16.4 percent higher than the Rp 693 billion targeted by the government.
Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto told the House of Representative's Commission V for transportation and tourism yesterday that the total profit in 1995 indicated an increase of 44.32 percent from the Rp 559.07 billion gained in 1994.
The ministry oversees 17 state-owned transportation firms, including three land transportation firms: railway firm Perumka, passenger and cargo bus operator Perum DAMRI and the Jakarta- based city bus operator Perum PPD.
In water transportation services, the firms include seaport management companies PT Pelindo I, PT Pelindo II, PT Pelindo III and PT Pelindo IV, sea freighter PT Bahtera Adhiguna, customs document service provider PT Varuna Tirta Prakasya, overseas freighter PT Djakarta Lloyd, shipping classification firm PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia, domestic shipping operator PT Pelni, dredging company PT Rukindo and the lake and river crossing transport PT ASDP.
The state-owned air transportation firms comprise flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia and airport operators PT Angkasa Pura I and PT Angkasa Pura II.
Haryanto said two companies, PPD and ASDP, still suffered losses last year.
He explained that PPD and ASDP suffered losses of Rp 3.91 billion and Rp 964 million respectively in 1995, as compared to Rp 15.91 billion and Rp 835 million respectively in 1994.
Varuna Tirta, which suffered a loss of Rp 755 million in 1994, gained a profit of Rp 175 million last year.
The minister said that Garuda recorded the highest profit of Rp 249.39 billion in 1995, followed by Pelindo II, which operates the Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta, with Rp 185.68 billion and Angkasa Pura II with Rp 105.27 billion.
He said the government projected that all of the companies would be profitable this year, with a total estimated profit of Rp 794.42 billion.
Out of the total targeted profit from the 17 transportation firms this year, Pelindo II is expected to gain the highest profit of Rp 205.54 billion, followed by Garuda with a profit of Rp 154.72 billion and Angkasa Pura II with Rp 120.13 billion. Angkasa Pura II manages several airports in the country's western region, including the Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports in Jakarta, the Polonia airport in Medan, North Sumatra, and the Tabing airport in Padang, West Sumatra.
