Killing at red-light district

JAKARTA (JP): A man who stabbed a prostitute at the unauthorized Malvinas red-light district in Bekasi on Tuesday turned his weapon on a man who tried to intervene, fatally wounding him.

Syarifuddin, in his 40s, was believed to be a security guard at the prostitution complex. He was allegedly killed by Kikim Sugiarto, 27, a resident of Central Jakarta, City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said yesterday.

The suspect was arrested immediately after the incident, Iman said.

The woman, identified only as Aan, 35, is in a serious condition and is being treated at a nearby hospital.

According to Iman, Kikim was a regular client of Aan's.

"While in the room, both were involved in a heated argument about the light," the spokesman said.

When Aan tried to turn the light on, Kikim produced a bayonet and allegedly stabbed Aan eight times.

Hearing Aan scream, Syarifuddin rushed into the room and was attacked by Kikim, Iman said. (bsr)
