High school dropout arrested for murder
JAKARTA (JP): Police have arrested one of the two people
suspected of killing and robbing an official of the attorney
general's office.
Ferry Aryanto, alias Ari, 19, a senior high school drop-out,
was arrested by elite mobile regiment officers at the Moonlite
discotheque at the Glodok shopping center on Jl. Gadjah Mada in
West Jakarta at 1 a.m. yesterday.
The other suspect, identified as Machfudin, alias Ferry, is
still at large, City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said
yesterday.
Based on preliminary investigations, Ari admitted that he and
his friend, Ferry, went to the house of Asnawi Naim, 50, a former
prosecutor, in the small alley Gang Idris in the West Jakarta
district of Sukabumi Utara on Jan. 12.
He also confessed that while the three men performed
homosexual acts on a bed, one of the suspects produced a knife,
put it under the blanket and then stabbed the victim twice in the
neck, the spokesman said.
Ari said that the other suspect then smashed the head of the
old man with a stone-made pestle, tied his legs together and
covered the victim's head with a blanket, according to Iman.
The corpse was found only three days later after neighbors
noticed an offensive smell coming from the house.
A son of the house's owner, who rented the place to the victim
about a year ago, opened the house and found Asnawi lying on his
bed wearing pajamas with his legs tied and head covered.
Police sources said that the real residence of Asnawi is in
Bogor where he lived with his wife and children.
Asnawi's neighbors in Gang Idris told The Jakarta Post
recently that the victim had lived there with his nephew named
Heri.
The last time Heri was seen at the scene was a day before the
body was found.
He told the neighbors that he was forced to sleep on the
veranda of the house after he found that the house was locked,
the neighbors said.
According to Iman, the full story of the killing and robbery
will only emerge after the other suspect is apprehended.
"The main thing which is already clear for the police is that
the suspects wanted to rob the victim," Iman said.
After committing the crime, the two suspects left the scene
hastily after taking a sum of money and other valuables belonging
to the victim, Iman said.
"The loot, including gold rings and a wristwatch, are worth
around Rp 700,000," the officer said.(bsr)
