KL commits $3.2b to triangle KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian companies have committed investments worth nearly US$3.2 billion to a growth triangle linking local firms and those from Indonesia and Thailand, a news report said yesterday. Thirty-nine business pacts have been sealed between the private sectors in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand growth triangle in the past 18 months, with Malaysian firms pledging some eight billion ringgit (3.2 billion dollars), the Bernama news agency said.

Violence against women increasing, police say JAKARTA (JP): The number of crimes committed against women in Indonesia increases every year, according to Col. Achwil Lutan, the deputy director of National Police's Directorate for Crime Investigation. At a seminar on violence against women yesterday, Achwil reported that 2,300 cases of sexual violence against women were recorded in 1992. In the following year, 3,200 cases were recorded and the first half of 1994 saw 3,000 cases, he said.

'Puskesmas' fee may be increased JAKARTA (JP): Plans to increase the fees charged by community health centers (Puskesmas) from Rp 300 to Rp 900 per patient may be realized if the city council approves a new city regulation on health matters, replacing a 1985 regulation. The increase was proposed by the City Health Office because of increases in the prices of health instruments and facilities, Soesilo Darmoaji, a spokesman for the health office, told Antara on Tuesday.

Cheating reporter sent to jail BANDA ACEH, Aceh: A senior journalist was given a 10-month prison sentence by the local district court on Tuesday for defrauding a local businessman. Antara reported that Syarif Haris, 41, was found guilty of cheating Ruslan B.N., director of PT Gasida Nusantara, out of Rp 105 million last October. The report did not name the publication Syarif works for but described him as deputy chairman of the Aceh chapter of the Association of Indonesian Journalists.

TV program helps solve robbery case JAKARTA (JP): A robbery allegedly carried out by at least seven people in Bekasi was uncovered after a victim saw her knife, stolen by the bandits and used in an attempted robbery, shown on a television program. According to City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Haryoko, the failed robbery took place on Saturday in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, with four of the suspects being arrested and several items of evidence, including the knife, seized.
