Protest at Japan consulate
DENPASAR, Bali: A group of students marched to the Japanese
consulate on Tuesday demanding an apology from the Japanese
television network NHK for reporting, erroneously, of an outbreak
of cholera on the holiday island.
The students said the NHK report has scared off many potential
Japanese tourists.
NHK should help restore the image and the good name of Bali,
the students, who met with chief of the consulate Katsuo
Yamashita, said, Antara reported.
The protesters were from the local chapter of the Indonesian
Nationalist Students Movement.
The NHK last month reported that many Japanese tourists
contracted cholera after returning from Bali.
Subsequent investigations in Bali found that there was no
outbreak of the disease. (emb)
