Quake rocks Irian Jaya

NABIRE, Irian Jaya: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the city of Nabire on Monday evening, sending residents scurrying out of their houses for safety.

The Meteorology Office of the Paniai Regency said the epicenter of the quake was about 105 km northwest of the city.

There were no reports of casualties or damages in the city.

Regency officials said they were still waiting for damage assessment reports from outlying regions. (emb)
