Bontang LNG plant to boost annual output to 21.6m tons JAKARTA (JP): State-owned oil company Pertamina plans to increase the annual capacity of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Bontang, East Kalimantan, to 21.6 million tons by the year 2000, with the operation of two new production trains. Toerki Witoelar, a deputy president of Pertamina subsidiary PT Badak NGL Co., which operates the Bontang plant, said the plant's six existing trains currently produce 15.4 million tons of LNG per year.

Bali roads wrecked by tides DENPASAR, Bali: A 51-kilometer stretch of road along Bali's coastline is being impaired by increasing abrasion and is now threatening to disrupt traffic to key residential, tourist and worship sites. Head of Bali's public works office, Wayan Subagiarta, said that whitecap-induced abrasion had occurred at 29 locations throughout Bali, Antara reported. Subroto has a new post JAKARTA (JP): Prof. Subroto, the former secretary-general of OPEC, was installed on Saturday as the new rector of Pancasila University, replacing Prof. Awaloedin Djamin. The ceremony was led by the head of the Pendidikan dan Pembina Foundation, Achmad Tahir, at the Lenteng Agung campus in South Jakarta. The foundation manages the university. Subroto, 67, a professor at the University of Indonesia, said in his speech that he was honored to be the rector of the university.

Automobile sales likely to increase by 20 percent JAKARTA (JP): Domestic automobile sales are estimated to increase by 20 percent to about 385,000 units this year, an executive said. Chairman of the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) Herman Z. Latief said on Friday that automotive sales increased by 50 percent to 320,000 units last year from 210,000 units in 1993. Total sales declined from 274,603 units in 1990 to 263,073 in 1991, and then again to 171,900 in 1992.

Cycling on Jl. Sudirman The other evening I was surprised to see two people cycling down Jl. Jend. Sudirman in the dark without lights. Given the volume of traffic along this major thoroughfare allowing cyclists to make use of this road is in my view dangerous. Although not officially a motorway in some senses Jl. Jend. Sudirman could be considered so and therefore it makes sense to prohibit cyclists. This would be simple to implement and cost very little except for a few signs.

Indonesian ship sinks, 15 missing HONG KONG (Reuter): A search was launched yesterday for 15 crew members of an Indonesian ship which sank off the Philippines, a Hong Kong marine department spokesman said. The pilot of a Hong Kong light aircraft, sent to the scene some 400 nautical miles south of Hong Kong, reported two ships had picked up 11 members of the stricken Andhika Wanatya. The 105-metre vessel, built in 1977, was outbound from Papua New Guinea to Hong Kong with a cargo of logs.
