Bun Yamin Ramto may face punishment over illegal building

JAKARTA (JP): Former deputy governor Bun Yamin Ramto may be
penalized for allegedly constructing a building in West Jakarta
without the necessary permits.

Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said last week that the
administration's prosecution of Bun Yamin is in accordance with
the law.

"Every violator should be punished according to the
regulations. But I have not yet received a complete report about
the matter," Surjadi said.

The governor did not say what penalty the former deputy
governor is likely to face if the case against him is proved.
Asked whether the building will be demolished, Surjadi said the
administration will not be too firm in implementing the
regulations.

Surjadi said that the regulations cannot always be followed
rigidly, saying it is more important that people understand the
regulations.

Kompas reported that Bun Yamin, a deputy governor of Jakarta
from 1982 to 1987, has admitted that his building on Jl. Kedoya
Raya, West Jakarta, was erected without a permit.

Bun Yamin has recently criticized the administration's
proposed land reclamation along Jakarta's northern coast line. He
said the that, if the scheme is carried out, it will cause
serious flooding in the city.

West Jakarta Mayor Sutardjianto said last week that his
office had ordered Bun Yamin to demolish the building within
seven days of an order issued on Dec. 11.

The head of the City Public Order Office, Kusaeni Budiantoro,
said his office is ready to demolish the building if and when it
receives the order from the West Jakarta mayoralty.

Bun Yamin's building houses an office of concrete mixing
company PT Betamix. The building is located nearby a concrete
aggregate mixing site.

In June the city administration sent a letter to PT Betamix,
telling it to relocate the mixing plant within two years because
the area is zoned for residential use.

The company has also been required to establish an
environmental management system to control noise and air
pollution to the residents living around the factory.

Residents living close to the mixing plant have complained
about noise emanating from the facility. (yns)
