Traders ask for new market

PANDEGLANG, West Java: Some 500 traders of Inpres Market, whose kiosks were destroyed in a recent fire, have asked Regent H. Yinto to move them to a nearby vacant lot.

Antara reported that the regent has yet to decide because the three-hectare plot is actually a makeshift terminal for minibuses plying the Pandeglang-Cadasari-Serang bus route.

"If we let the traders use the land, where will we move the terminal to?" said regency's spokesman Ahmad Ambari. "They should be more patient, we're doing everything we can to help them."

A total of 739 kiosks in the market were ravaged by a fire, caused by short-circuit, which occurred last Wednesday night. The incident caused an estimated loss of Rp 1.6 billion (US$ 704,225), but no casualties were reported.

The traders called on the authorities to find them a place to resume business as soon as possible. (swe)
