Bali roads wrecked by tides

DENPASAR, Bali: A 51-kilometer stretch of road along
Bali's coastline is being impaired by increasing abrasion and is
now threatening to disrupt traffic to key residential, tourist
and worship sites.

Head of Bali's public works office, Wayan Subagiarta, said
that whitecap-induced abrasion had occurred at 29 locations
throughout Bali, Antara reported.

Wayan said since 1981, periodic repairs and continuous
monitoring of the situation has been undertaken. He noted that
the difficulty is being caused by different characteristics of
waves hitting Bali's shoreline and that this is threatening over
500 kilometers of road hugging the shoreline.

Included in the repairs, which have been done since 1990, is
the 2.95-kilometer road along Singaraja beach, which cost the
central government Rp 3.42 billion to build.
