Subroto has a new post

JAKARTA (JP): Prof. Subroto, the former secretary-general of
OPEC, was installed on Saturday as the new rector of Pancasila
University, replacing Prof. Awaloedin Djamin.

The ceremony was led by the head of the Pendidikan dan Pembina
Foundation, Achmad Tahir, at the Lenteng Agung campus in South
Jakarta. The foundation manages the university.

Subroto, 67, a professor at the University of Indonesia, said
in his speech that he was honored to be the rector of the
university. "I'll try to help the university produce excellent
graduates," he promised.

Ahmad Tahir said the new rector would face serious challenges
in preparing the students to enter a world dominated by the
globalization of information and free trade.

Awaloedin had been the rector of the 29-year-old Pancasila
University since Dec. 1, 1983.

"Awaloedin took the rectorial post when the university had
only 2,400 students. Now it has 13,000 students. It is a
remarkable success," Tahir added.

In his farewell address, Awaloedin said his achievement in
leading the university was due to the support of all university
teachers, staff, students and even the students' parents. (sur)
