Dody Sumantyawan, acknowledged on Wednesday that the number of reported drug cases in the province had soared by 96 percent in 2003. In 2002, the number of drug cases reported was 133, but as of Dec. 31, 2003 it reached 261 cases. The increased number of drug cases was a result of a greater number of traffickers who has set up operations in the area, he said.

Java CIREBON, West Java: A total of 235 people were killed in traffic accidents along the northern coastal highway in West Java for the year 2003, a senior police officer said on Wednesday. Sr. Comr. Sunaryono, the chief of Cirebon police, said that the traffic accidents also severely injured 114 people and lighter injures to 116. The traffic accidents caused estimated material losses to people of some Rp 500 million (US$58,824).

Water charges I read in The Jakarta Post that as of Jan. 4 tap water charges will increase by another 30 percent. This greatly disturbs me. Why are we, PAM water users, burdened with such a raise, while almost 50 percent of the tap water is used by people not paying for it. Why am I forced to subsidize the sloppiness of the government c/o PAM, which cannot get its act together by controlling the use of tap water and making people pay for it?
