Fireworks set two buildings alight

JAKARTA: An office on Jl. Melati, Rawa Badak subdistrict, Koja, North Jakarta, and a car workshop on Jl. Kopi, Roa Malaka subdistrict, Tambora, West Jakarta, caught fire after fireworks were lit for New Year celebrations.

Eyewitness Ice Yolanda, 27, told police from Koja Police subprecinct that the office of real estate firm Rancang Semesta Transportindo was engulfed by fire after a firework got into one of the rooms and set light to paper documents stored there.

The fire broke out after midnight. The two fire trucks deployed to extinguish it managed to put it out 15 minutes after midnight.

Police failed to find the person that had lit the firework.

In the fire at a workshop owned by Oie Han Tjan, 45, a firework dropped into the workshop premises and set fire to auto parts in the workshop.

According to Suwedi, 29, a security guard in the neighborhood, the fire started at 20 minutes after midnight and was doused at 1 a.m., thanks to the help of residents. -- JP
