CIREBON, West Java: A total of 235 people were killed in traffic accidents along the northern coastal highway in West Java for the year 2003, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.
Sr. Comr. Sunaryono, the chief of Cirebon police, said that the traffic accidents also severely injured 114 people and lighter injures to 116.
The traffic accidents caused estimated material losses to people of some Rp 500 million (US$58,824).
"The human victims and the material losses were the outcomes of 186 traffic accidents on that one highway as it runs through Indramayu, Majalengka, Kuningan and Cirebon in West Java," he said. The figures were recorded from Jan. 1 to Dec. 25 this year.
The data, however showed a slight drop in fatalities from 2002, wherein 259 people died, while 139 others suffered severe injures. -- Antara
