Indonesia as
Indonesia as
corruption champion?
From Media Indonesia
Several cases of fraud involving national banks have emerged
amid the effort to restore the national economy and the process
of leadership selection of the Corruption Eradication Commission
(KPK).
In dealing with the bank theft, the Attorney General's Office
should order a special examination by independent auditors, which
would earn this institution credit points and finally deal with
its negative image.
With intellectual actors behind the scandals -- mostly old
faces involved in previous banking embezzlement -- all law
enforcement agencies should have the courage to take stern
measures.
Unless this crime is tackled seriously and corruptors are
subject to legal action, domestic and international confidence in
the national banking system will dwindle, which will harm the
national economic recovery.
Without a proper response to the public apathy and pessimism,
the commission would not be that different to other agencies of
its kind, and the attempt to totally eliminate corruption would
never materialize. Wouldn't we be ashamed of holding on to the
title of corruption "champion"?
