RI housekeeper in U.S. wins labor case LOS ANGELES (AP): An Indonesian, who worked without travel documents as a live-in housekeeper for a Californian couple, was awarded US$47,827 yesterday in a lawsuit claiming she had been exploited by her employers. Yuni Mulyono was awarded back wages with interest and legal fees by Superior Court Judge Jack W. Morgan, who said in his May 23 ruling that her immigration status was a "non-issue".

Indonesia wins dragon boat race JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia won the Penang International Dragon Boat Invitational after beating ten countries in Malaysia on Sunday. The Indonesia team consisted of rowers being groomed for the 19th Southeast Asian Games. They beat the strong Chinese and Hong Kong teams which had to settle for the second and third place respectively. Indonesia clocked three minutes and 6.54 seconds. China recorded 3:11.14 and Malaysia 3:23.14.

Gajah Tunggal to build $500m caprolactam plant JAKARTA (JP): Gajah Tunggal group has signed an agreement with Lurgi of Germany and Samsung Engineering Company of South Korea to set up a caprolactam plant with US$500 million investment. The company said yesterday the plant would be built on a 30- hectare of land in Gresik, East Java. The plant will process key raw materials for nylon production. It will be able to make 120,000 tons a year.

German govt honors Soni JAKARTA: The president of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Roman Herzog, has conferred the Order of Merit on State Minister of Agrarian Affairs Soni Harsono. The German embassy said in its statement yesterday the medal and shoulder belt was the highest honor that could be awarded to a minister from a foreign country. Soni, also chairman of the National Land Agency, had given valuable contributions to relations between Germany and Indonesia, the German embassy said.

Citramobil Nasional cuts Bimantara car prices JAKARTA (JP): PT Citramobil Nasional, a unit of publicly listed PT Bimantara Citra, has slashed its car prices by six percent to capture the growing sedan market. Citramobil president Jongkie D. Sugiarto announced yesterday that the 1,500-cc Cakra sedan now sold for Rp 42.5 million (US$17,450) with on-road costs, down from Rp 45 million. The 1,600-cc Nenggala sedan now sells for Rp 56 million, with on-road costs, down from Rp 59.5 million.

Upon delivery and installation, we checked and verified that all burners (four hot plates, oven and grill) were in working condition. After the stove was installed, I examined the instruction manual to find Celsius conversion temperatures for the numbers on the stove's regulator dial.

The airlines said yesterday that the jets would ply three of Emirates's four weekly services to Jakarta via Singapore. The fourth will still use the A310-300 aircraft it has used since starting the Indonesian service in 1992. Emirates said the B777s would increase capacity by 50 percent.

Dharmala Agrifood sees drop in profit JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Dharmala Agrifood expects a 39 percent decline in net profit this year to Rp 11 billion (US$4.58 million) from Rp 18.2 billion in 1996. Natalia Dewi Sari, a director of the company, said yesterday the projected drop was due to a decline in non-operating income. Last year the company's net profit surged 115 percent to Rp 18.2 billion from Rp 8.47 billion in 1995.

BI fraud trial postponed
BI fraud trial postponed JAKARTA (JP): The Bank Indonesia (BI) fraud trial adjourned yesterday at Central Jakarta District Court because the prosecutor was not ready with his sentence request. Nawam Kawi, Roy Indra Kusnohadi and Andi Muis are charged with defrauding the central bank of Rp 7 billion (U$2.9 million). Prosecutor Petrus Sambara said he needed more time to finish the request. Presiding judge Gatam Taridi agreed and adjourned the session until Thursday.
