Residents fear for mosque

JAKARTA (JP): Residents in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta said they hoped a historic mosque would not have to give way to a high-rise building project.

Pos Kota daily reported yesterday that the Wisma Mulia project has already been threatening the mosque, built in 1930, through excavation and deafening construction sounds. Residents also complained that the contracting firm lacked awareness about its surroundings, often raising a large amount of dust.

Contractor Albertus said that the project would not harm the mosque. He said a foundation had been constructed around the mosque.

"We have anticipated unwanted possibilities," Albertus said.

He added he was not responsible for the surroundings. The name of the mosque was not revealed. (anr)
