Rare mammals found in Irian

MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya: The Worldwide Fund for Nature has found a rare species of mammal believed to be native to the province.

Antara reported that Ronald Petocz of the United States said the mammal that he had identified as neophascogale lorentzii had been found in large numbers in the Meren moss valley, 3,750 meters above sea level.

The mammal could grow up to 23 centimeters long. Petocz said the animal was very beautiful with thick, reddish-brown fur and light yellow and black spots on its back. (pan)
