Anawin buys JIHD shares JAKARTA (JP): Anawin Holdings BV of the Netherlands, owned by a consortium of investors led by Lazard Asia Investment BV, has acquired a 10 percent stake in PT Jakarta International Hotels & Development (JIHD). The company said in a statement yesterday that the initial stake totals 38.6 million shares representing an investment of approximately Rp 122.6 billion (US$52.6 million). "In the near future Anawin will acquire additional JIHD shares," the statement said.

Sadistic killers sent to jail PADANG, West Sumatra: Two young men were found guilty by the local district court yesterday for the sadistic murder of 12-year-old Wulanda last October, Antara reported. The news agency said 18-year-old Martin Sumitra received 20 years in jail while 24-year-old Amrizal alias Andi Bocah got 15 years for their part in the killing. A third man, 25-year-old Andi Gaek who was tried separately, previously received a 15-year sentence.

Nuclear bill sets liability of Rp 450b JAKARTA (JP): A government-sponsored bill on nuclear energy has set the maximum liability of a nuclear power plant operator or developer at Rp 450 billion ($120 million) for damages caused by leakage or any other type of accident. The maximum liability includes the compensation the operator or developer will have to pay to victims of a nuclear accident, State Minister of Research and Technology B.J. Habibie told the House of Representatives.

On May 22, 1996 at about 7 a.m. I saw at the post a security guard viciously kicking the front wheel of an employee's motorcycle, because the rider failed to stop his motorbike when flagged down. The employee was apparently bewildered at this treatment.

Five more HIV cases detected in May JAKARTA (JP): Five more people carrying the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or suffering from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) were identified last month, taking the total number of reported cases in Indonesia to 406. ADB lends Indonesia MANILA (Reuter): The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said yesterday it has approved an US$85 million loan for Indonesia to help improve basic education. The Bank said the loan would come from its ordinary capital resources. The loan would have a repayment period of 25 years, including a grace period of five years. Timor in South Korea Trade and Industry Minister Tunky Ariwibowo is to be pitied for his impossible task of explaining the logic and merit of Presidential Decree No.42/1996 allowing PT Timor Putra Nasional to import completely-built-up (CBU) sedans from South Korea's Kia Motor plant. Whatever argument Tunky employs to defend the new ruling, it will be the butt of many a cynical joke.

Berlian Laju Tanker's profits decline by 5 percent JAKARTA (JP): PT Berlian Laju Tanker, a publicly-listed shipping company, yesterday said that its net profits declined by 5 percent last year to Rp 9.6 billion (US$4 million) despite an increase of 9 percent in its revenues. "The profit decline was due to some vessel maintenance expenses payable in 1995, an increase in costs of bank loans and a weaker economic situation at the end of the year," Berlian's president, Hadi Surya, said.
