Almond may become Bogor's plant

BOGOR (JP): Almonds will probably be adopted formally as Bogor's "characteristic plant", an official says.

"Almond trees have long lined our sidewalks," M. Basit, the township's spokesman, said earlier this week.

He said the township was discussing the official adoption of the tree known as the Javanese almond as Bogor's very own plant.

State Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja earlier urged all regencies and townships to claim special plants and animals.

Bogor, home of the Botanical Gardens, is famed for its almond handicraft. Crafters buy the almonds from those who pick the fruits every morning along the roads.

These souvenirs include rings and bracelets, and are often found in handicraft exhibitions.

"Our almond creations are sold in Japan and Europe," Basit said.

The township started a tree planting program in 1994.

The local "One Million Trees" project is being carried out in cooperation with Bogor Institute of Agriculture and local women and youth groups.

"If the trees grow, Bogor will be Almond Town," Basit said. (21/anr)
