YBI to hold Batik Exhibition
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Batik Foundation (YBI) will organize a national batik exhibition called Gelar Batik Nusantara at the Plenary Hall, Jakarta Hilton Convention Center from June 10 through June 14.
Mrs. Ginandjar Kartasasmita, chairperson of the foundation, told the press yesterday that the exhibition is scheduled to be opened by Mrs. Try Sutrisno, wife of Vice President Try Sutrisno on June 10 at 3.30 p.m.
The exhibition will display hand-made and printed batik from Indonesia's 14 provinces, comprising West Java, Central and East Java, Jambi, Bengkulu, Bali, Madura, Lombok, South Sulawesi and East Kalimantan.
Mrs. Ginanjar said the main objective of the exhibition is to provide a forum where batik producers and buyers can meet. The event is also intended to promote batik as one of Indonesia's most valuable traditions. Aside from the batik exhibition, the foundation will also arrange a seminar on batik on June 11 and a fashion show featuring batik designs by Ghea S. Panggabean, the Prayudi House of Fashion and Tutty Cholid on June 12.
The Batik foundation was established last year to improve the welfare of the country's batik makers. The foundation is also active in the preservation of antique batik and the promotion of batik on the international market. (raw)
