Students demand follow-up on riot
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: A group of students from three universities sent a statement to Governor H.Z.B. Palaguna yesterday demanding a follow-up on April's bloody incident which left three of their fellow-students dead.
The students from Indonesian Moslem University, the Teacher Training Institute and 1945 University said the government has not kept to its side of the bargain to a joint agreement signed by students, college administrators and the military.
Under the agreement, the students ended their protest in return for promises of action to resolve various problems.
Among the promises that the students reminded the governor of was that those responsible for the three deaths would be punished and that the authorities would repair the damage to their campus buildings.
The incident in late April was sparked by a students' protest against local bus fare hikes. The protest turned into a riot when troopers moved into the campuses to quell the protest as it became rowdy. (20/emb)
