Construction of Kodeco's cement plant starts KOTABARU, South Kalimantan (JP): PT Indo Kodeco Cement, a Korean-Japanese-Indonesian joint venture, held its ground breaking ceremony here yesterday to launch the construction of its US$495-million cement plant. The executive director of the company, Daddy Hariadi, said the cement project, scheduled to be completed in August 1998, will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons.

Manila to file charges against Marcopper MANILA (Reuter): Philippine officials said yesterday they were filing criminal charges against executives of Marcopper and threatened to blacklist the partly Canadian-owned mine firm after its waste swamped a 25-kilometer long river. Environment Secretary Victor Ramos released initial findings of an inquiry board saying Marcopper had violated environmental safety rules by spilling tons of waste into the Boac river on central Marindugue island.

Clove price increased The government decided last week to increase the producer (floor) price of cloves by 1.2 percent to Rp 8,000 (US$3.44) per kilogram from the Rp 7,900 set in early 1992. That measure followed last month's decision to extend the private sector monopoly in clove trading for three years. The increase is obviously negligible, especially in view of the 34 percent inflation over the past four years.
