JAKARTA (JP): American sprinter Dennis Mitchell, 1994 world
number one, is among 44 world-class athletes on yesterday's list
of confirmed participants in the second Bob Hasan Track and Field
Invitational Meet on May 4.
The list, sent by the meet's organizer to The Jakarta Post
yesterday, also includes 1992 Olympic Games silver medalist in
the women's 100m and 200m, Juliet Cuthbert of Jamaica.
It will be the American's second appearance here after the
inaugural meet he won in 1994.
Mitchell, 100m bronze medalist in the 1992 Olympic Games in
Barcelona, clocked his personal best of 9.91 seconds in 1994.
Three-time world men's discus champion Lars Riedel of Germany
earlier confirmed his participation to the Indonesian Amateur
Track and Field Association last week.
The other world-class athletes on the list are those whose
world ranking is no less than 50th. They include American
sprinter Vincent Henderson and his Canadian counterpart Glenroy
Gilbert.
Indonesian Amateur Track and Field Association chairman
Mohammad (Bob) Hasan said that he was delighted to see more
world-class athletes on the list.
Hasan, who launched the meet in 1994, has many reasons to be
delighted. His invitational meet this year, called International
Amateur Athletics Federation permit meet, can be turned into an
Asian grand prix if successful.
Indicators used by the federation to measure the success of a
meet are, among others, the presence of world-class athletes,
media coverage and the number of spectators.
World-class athletes aside, the rooster also pick some Asian
and Southeast Asian champions. Indonesia has named men's
sprinters Erwin Heru Susanto and Agustinus Ngamel, 1500m male
runner Julius Leuwol and 1500m female runner Tri Asih Handayani
to the one-day event. (arf)
