Thai PM to visit Myanmar BANGKOK (AFP): Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa will become the first Thai prime minister to visit Myanmar in 15 years when he leaves for a two-day official trip to Yangon on March 17, an official said yesterday. Banharn, who had been planning to visit Myanmar since December, will meet with Myanmar's powerful intelligence chief, Khin Nyunt, and Than Shwe, chairman of the ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council.

World Rally championship adds new stages JAKARTA (JP): Four special stages will be added to the World Rally championship scheduled for May 10 in Medan, North Sumatra. The rally drivers will tackle the four stages, located around the Parapat regency south of the North Sumatra capital, on the second day of the championship. The stages are part of the second leg of the three-leg speed race, which has 27 special stages stretching 1,287 kilometers.

Predawn fire in North Jakarta kills seven JAKARTA (JP): Seven people, including three women, died in a predawn fire in the densely-populated Pejagalan subdistrict in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. All of the victims, aged between 17 and 52, were burned beyond recognition. It appeared that most of the victims were sleeping soundly when the fire took place at around 3:30 a.m. Some of the bodies have been taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for postmortems.

PON to use 44 venues JAKARTA (JP): The Organizing Committee of the 14th National Games are renovating 44 venues in time to be used in the quadrennial sporting festival. Trade surplus plunges JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's trade surplus fell by 41 percent to US$4.75 billion in 1995 from $8.07 billion in the previous year despite a strong rebound last December, Minister of Information Harmoko announced here yesterday. Speaking after a monthly cabinet meeting on the economy, Harmoko said total exports grew by 13.4 percent to $45.42 billion last year from $40.05 billion in 1994, while imports soared by 27 percent to $40.66 billion from $30.98 billion.

Traffic victims compensated JAKARTA (JP): The state-run insurance company, PT Jasa Raharja, has paid Rp 49 million in compensation to the families of traffic accident victims injured during the recent Idul Fitri holiday. Beneficiaries of deceased victims were given up to Rp 2 million per person and those injured were compensated with a maximum of Rp 1.5 million in medical costs. The compensation covers 20 dead and 9 injured people.
