Traffic victims compensated
JAKARTA (JP): The state-run insurance company, PT Jasa
Raharja, has paid Rp 49 million in compensation to the families
of traffic accident victims injured during the recent Idul Fitri
holiday.
Beneficiaries of deceased victims were given up to Rp 2
million per person and those injured were compensated with a
maximum of Rp 1.5 million in medical costs. The compensation
covers 20 dead and 9 injured people.
Last year, the Jasa Raharja insurance company paid Rp 38
million to the families of Idul Fitri travelers who were involved
in traffic accidents.
Sources at the company said Tuesday that the peak period of
holiday travel this year fell a week prior to and a week after
the Idul Fitri celebrations on Feb. 20 and 21.
Family members of 26 victims, still grief-stricken by the
mishaps that befell their loved ones, received the compensation
at the company's branch office in the capital. Compensation
payments were also made at branches throughout the country.
Public transport passengers and drivers involved in traffic
accidents are eligible to receive compensation. But private
motorists who cause accidents are not.
According to a staff member at the insurance company, many
passengers are unaware that they have paid for insurance cover
when they purchase public transport tickets. (14)
