PON to use 44 venues

JAKARTA (JP): The Organizing Committee of the 14th National
Games are renovating 44 venues in time to be used in the
quadrennial sporting festival.

The city authorities will provide 18 venues, while the rest
will be leased from various state institutions. All venues at the
state-owned Senayan sports complex will stage events during the
10-day competition in September.

Thousands of athletes from the country's 27 provinces will
compete in 35 sports during the Games. Jakarta is playing host to
the Games for a record sixth time in a row.

The National Sports Council decided last year to move the
Games forward one year from its original schedule in 1997 because
of the general election and the 19th Southeast Asian Games
already planned for next year. (amd)
