More squash courts needed JAKARTA (JP): A lack of training sites and courts is one of the biggest problems faced by Indonesian squash players as they prepare for next year's 19th Southeast Asian Games. "Squash is a relatively new sport in Indonesia, so the number of training grounds and courts is still quite limited," Max Bambang Sumantri, the Indonesian Squash Association chairman, said yesterday.

Two arrested for murder JAKARTA (JP): Two unemployed men living in the slum area of the illegal Bongkaran prostitution area in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, were arrested yesterday morning and charged with murdering a man they said accused them of being extortionists. Head of the Tanah Abang police subprecinct, Maj. Zulkarnain, said the two suspects, Bahri Sading and Ali Laesang, both 23, were arrested at a house in Bogor six hours after the incident, over 30 kilometers south of Jakarta.

19th SEA Games organizer faces budgetary problems JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta SEA Games Organizing Committee is facing financial problems to stage the 19th Games here in October next year. Rifda Ammarina, the committee spokeswoman, said yesterday that five of committee's 10 divisions have submitted their budget planning but the amount has already reached Rp 70 billion (US$29.5 million). The total budget amount of Rp 70 billion is the current planned budget for organizing the biennial Games.

The 1,600 fern stalks, scientifically known as cyathea spinulosa, were about to be shipped to Inchon, South Korea, the head of the Jakarta forestry ministry office, Purwadi Mangunwardoyo, said. The port authority confiscated the ferns. The ferns originated from Cicurug, Sukabumi, West Java.

Demolition starts in Pejompongan JAKARTA (JP): Twenty-seven of the 32 brothels in the illegal Pejompongan Indah prostitution complex, Central Jakarta, were demolished yesterday to make way for new apartment building. The head of Bendungan Hilir subdistrict, Yamin Abdullah said the buildings were sealed off by the authorities since March. The owners agreed to compensation from the administration of between Rp 300,000 to Rp 900,000 per square meter, he said.

Indonesia to rely on sugar imports until 2000 JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will continue to be a net importer of sugar until the year 2000 because of steadily rising domestic demand, an official said yesterday. The Ministry of Agriculture's Director General of Plantations A. Rante Tondok said domestic per capita sugar consumption would reach 18 kilograms in 2000, up from 17 kg last year. National sugar consumption would increase from 3.3 million tons in 1995 to 3.8 million tons in 2000, he added.

Tsae Wen Chou, 49, was allegedly murdered by one of his crew, David Ramil, 21, a Philippine national. Bitung police precinct chief Lt. Col. Slamet Darmawan said the murder happened on the night of Nov. 11 on the Kluwung which was fishing in Indonesian waters near East Timor.

Official jailed for slander JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta District Court jailed a Ministry of Religious Affairs official for six months yesterday for slanderous statements over virginity in South Sulawesi. Presiding Judge Asmar Ismail said Karimuddin, 44, the public relations chief of the ministry's office in South Sulawesi, had said in a seminar that Toraja's young women were promiscuous, even though he did not intend to offend anyone. Karimuddin was also fined Rp 500 (US$0.2).
